What is Biotechnology?

The Technological application of a biological system(s), living organism(s), to make or modify products or processes forspecific use, such as in disease treatment.

This course introduces students to the fundamental scientific principles of biotechnology, career pathways in the biosciences, and biotechnology business applications. The Introduction to Biotechnology course emphasizes how concepts from biology, chemistry and engineering apply to applications with the biological sciences, such as disease treatment, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural products, Introduction to Biotechnology will provide students an opportunity to practice real world skills on current and relevant topics in a lab setting, provide them an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the science of biotechnology and its role in oursociety, and give them the knowledge to be more prepared to make decisions about issues tied to biotechnology. A significant part of the course involves lab based work in which students work to master the content via experiments scientists and technicians are doing in laboratories world­wide. The laboratory investigations will emphasis many of the fundamental techniques and concepts of modern molecular biology, including basic micropipetting, restriction enzymes, electrophoresis gel analysis, and gene amplification by PCR (polymerase chain reaction). This focus on working knowledge allows students to learn and practice the skills that they would actually use in the field of biotechnology.
