    Assignment

Black Boy: Modern Day Racism Open Response

TASK: As a class we investigated the cultural, institutional, and personal racisms that affected
Richard Wright's life as a young man growing up in early 1900's South. Yet, despite the civil rights
movement, there remain a number of racisms today. Using database research, you and your group will
investigate an area of modern day racism and present an open response argument to the class.

    Written Open Response will include…

A claim regarding TYPE of racism (cultural or institutional) is specific, clear, and
    reinforced: topic and clincher sentences

An argument is maintained throughout the open response and supported and quotes/proof
that are artfully selected, tied down, and explained: Context, “Quote” (cite). Explain

    • Each groupmate must obtain an article from a PEER REVIEWED ACADEMIC

JOURNAL via on of the library databases-- be sure to use CITATION

RESOURCES to obtain proper in text and works cited page citations.

Diction that is clever and syntax that is varied

Grammar and mechanics that are carefully revised

A works cited page that lists sources in ABC order, in MLA format

MLA format (header and page #, heading, title, 1” margins, etc.)

    Oral Presentations will include…

A thorough introduction that provides the context of your type of racism, and clearly
    indicates your topic

    • Three clear points that are well supported by database research

o Use Prezi to highlight important information for each point

    • One closing statement that wraps up your topic

OVERALL, presentations will be well organized, rehearsed and clear. Points used to support

topic sentence should be logical and have appropriate support. Presenter should interact

with their Prezi (point to significant quotes, gesture to the images, etc) and each individual is

responsible for presenting their researched point.

    Prezi Presentations will include…

Only outlined information of your presentation

o DO NOT copy and entire paragraph; instead only write the most pertinent details

from your papers (You may have your topic sentence verbatim, if you wish)

At least 5 frames of your choice (circle, square, or bracket)

    o Introduction to topic

    o Point 1

    o Point 2

    o Point 3

    o Conclusion

You may wish to include separate frames for your facts.

At least 5 inserted images that compliment and strengthen the focus of your presentation.

o DO NOT use cheesy clip art images; your visuals should be powerful

An organized path that navigates through the Prezi in conjunction with your argument.

***EMAIL FINAL PREZI DOCUMENT TO: jcahill@slrsd.org before 7:00 am on Friday, October 12.***
