Summer Reading Overview
Silver Lake Regional High School
For all Silver Lake Regional High School students who are not enrolled in Honors English II, AP English Language and Composition, or AP English Literature and Composition...
Summer Reading Philosophy - The purpose of summer reading at Silver Lake Regional High School is to encourage continued good reading habits throughout the year, and to foster a love of reading outside of school. Research tells us that pleasure reading is closely linked to academic success. As such, our program is designed to tap into the most important factor in motivating students to read: choice.
Choose Your Own Summer Reading - This year, we will be taking this notion of choice to the highest level. In English classes, teachers will guide students through a process of reviewing books they are most likely to enjoy. After “browsing” several options, a student will choose the best fit. He or she will then be required to make a case for his or her book by submitting a written discussion of the process used in choosing it and of the expectations the student has for reading the book going forward.
Book Access- One of the benefits of the “Choose Your Own Summer Reading” program is that it allows students to choose books that are readily available to them. Students can find their summer reading books at home, at local libraries, at amazon.com or other online stores, or at local bookstores. In June we will also be conducting a summer reading book swap during lunches where students who leave a book can also take one from the collection. Additionally, the high school library will be allowing returning students to take out books over the summer.
Parents - Parents are also encouraged to take an active role in the process: make book suggestions, approve content, perhaps even read the book as well.
